Dispose of Asbestos Right

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in rock and soil and has been used in some building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant. Types of building materials can include roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, attic and wall insulation, and more. There are federal laws and regulations that govern the handling of materials that might contain asbestos.

Ohio law and rules require that persons certified as Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialists be used to identify, detect, and assess asbestos-containing materials. For a list of certified specialists, contact the Ohio Department of Health Asbestos Program. Call (614) 466-0061 or send an email. The safest thing is to leave the material alone. If you need to remove or disturb the material due to a renovation project, contact an Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialist to confirm the material is asbestos-containing.
