Dispose of Durable Plastic Goods Right

Do not place durable plastic items such as plastic toys, five-gallon buckets, large cat litter pails, totes or bins, plastic hangers, furniture, and flower pots in your curbside recycling.

Five-gallon pails, including cat litter pails, should be reused or placed in the regular trash. These items are too large to be included in home recycling and will cause issues at the material recovery facility (MRF) that sorts your community's recycling.

Reuse or Donate

Some pet supply stores offer bulk refills of cat litter pails; check with your local store. You can also post plastic pails for free on donation sites or boards such as Freecycle. Many people, including gardeners, contractors, landscapers, and painters, use them for projects.

Usable plastic clothes hangers may be donated to a thrift store, drama club, dry cleaner, or other local organization. Consider your options and check with the place you'd like to make your donation. Items can also be posted on sharing sites or donation boards such as Freecycle.

If the item cannot be donated for reuse, place it in the regular trash for disposal.
